How to Draw a Crochet Chart Online
You can draw a crochet chart online without installing software or creating an account — right in your browser. Below is a step-by-step guide to drawing a chart in CastOnLab, from choosing a layout to exporting the finished file.
1. Choose a layout — grid or radial
For motifs, amigurumi, doilies and other circular pieces, use the radial grid (concentric circles and sectors from the center). For flat pieces, use the standard rectangular grid. The number of circles, sectors and the grid radius are all adjustable to fit your project.
2. Place stitch symbols
The right-side panel holds the symbol library organized by category: base/short stitches and picots, chain-up stitches, taller stitches, clusters, post stitches and compound elements. Click a symbol, then click a grid cell or snap point — the symbol is placed.
3. Use snapping to keep rows straight
Snapping to lines, circles and intersections automatically pulls symbols to the nearest guide or a neighboring symbol's vertex, so rows line up without manual nudging.
4. Group and align elements
Select several symbols and group them (Ctrl+G) to move and rotate them as one unit — handy for a repeating pattern section. Alignment to edges and center is also available.
5. Export the finished chart
Once the chart is done, export it as a PDF for printing or as an SVG for editing in vector software — right from the browser, no software to install.
If you need a refresher on what each symbol means, see the crochet chart symbol guide.
